The imperishable soul

vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya
navani grhnati naro ‘parani
tatha sarirani vihaya jirnany
anyani samyati navani dehi

As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, similarly, the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

So proclaims Lord Krishna in Chapter 2, verse 22, Shrimadbhagvadgita. And we hear this right from our childhood days. But, still we are unable to realize this fact that it is only the body that perishes and not the soul . Lord syas that you know that as indestructible that pervades all through you. Surely, that indestructible leaves our bodies exactly the same way as one changes clothes. And we, unable to realize this, get grief, sorrow and stand bewildered.

Rama therefore tells in Shriramcharitmanas that one has to clearly ascertain as to whom for one is crying. Is it body or is it soul! If it is body then the body is lying before you. There is no reason for sorrow. And if it is for soul then the soul is indestructible. Here again, the grief is irrational.

सो तनु तुम्हरें आगे सोवा।जीव नित्य केहि लगि तुम रोवा।।

If one reads these two verses simultaneously and God willing, the knowledge strikes him, he will be freed from all miseries.
